Opening Reception: January 25, 2017 from 5 pm – 7 pm. The Channel Islands Maritime Museum presents Love Letters Home, an exhibition that will explore different ways in which sailors and soldiers corresponded with their loved ones waiting back home. This exhibit will feature countless letters written by Donald Brug, a local man who was enlisted in the Army during WWII, and sailed around the world during the 1960s, as well as “trench art” and other artifacts from the US Navy Seabees, who celebrate their 75th anniversary this coming March.

In an era of instantaneous communication, Love Letters Home will examine a time when hearing from a loved one could take days, months, or even years. Separation and the longing it produced was an ever-present reality for these men, women and children of both maritime and wartime communities alike. Letters and objects sent back home became a means of remembrance for separated families.
Through the display of artifacts and reproductions, Love Letters Home will explore the common themes found in letters sent home by sailors in the past and today: loneliness, separation, hardship, and endurance. These letters, along with mementoes, gifts, and souvenirs serve as keepsakes and reminders of affection and love over the distance

The Channel Islands Maritime Museum NEW hours are Thursday to Monday from 11-5pm. Located in Oxnard’s Channel Islands Harbor at 3900 Bluefin Circle. Explore galleries full of rare and beautiful maritime paintings dating back to the 1600’s, more than sixty world-class models of historic ships, rotating thematic fine arts exhibitions, and interactive exhibits that encourage visitors to expand their horizons about everything maritime.

NEW Museum entry is $7 adults, $5 seniors, $3 children (ages 6-17), and free for members and children under 6. Third Thursday of the month is free.
