December 2024 Director’s Message

I am pleased to share several important updates regarding the future of Channel Islands Harbor. This harbor continues to thrive and evolve, offering a variety of opportunities for the community and visitors alike. We are excited to see several key developments underway that will help maintain the harbor’s infrastructure, support economic growth, and contribute to the well-being of Ventura County.

Harbor Dredging Update

One of the most significant and vital ongoing projects is the bi-annual dredging of the harbor. The dredging process, which had been delayed due to administrative challenges between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the State Water Resources Control Board, is now set to begin in December 2024. This essential work will not only replenish sand at the downcoast Hueneme Beach, maintaining its environmental health, but will also ensure that the harbor entrance remains navigable for recreational and commercial vessels. Maintaining a safe and functional harbor is crucial for both commercial and recreational activities in the area, and we look forward to the completion of this critical project in the coming months.

Hyatt House Development

Another exciting update comes from the Hyatt House developers on the harbor peninsula. Fences have been erected around the entire peninsula property and grading work has begun, signaling the official start of construction for the new hotel. Once completed, this development will offer new accommodations, contributing to the local economy and providing visitors with a high-quality place to stay as they explore the harbor and surrounding areas. We are thrilled to see this project take shape and look forward to the positive impact it will have on tourism and the community.

Karl’s Adventure Village at Fisherman’s Wharf

Lastly, I’m excited to report that the developers of Karl’s Village at Fisherman’s Wharf are nearing the final stages of their planning process. They will soon be submitting their project for approval to the California Coastal Commission in the spring. If approved, Karl’s will enter into a 30-year lease agreement with the County of Ventura, and the team will begin the process of securing building permits through the City of Oxnard. This family-friendly attraction promises to be an exciting addition to the harbor, offering new recreational options and further strengthening the harbor’s role as a key destination for visitors of all ages.

Looking Ahead

These projects represent just a glimpse of the continued growth and development at Channel Islands Harbor. As we move forward, we remain committed to ensuring the harbor remains a vibrant and welcoming space for all who visit and use its services. Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to sharing more updates with you in the future.
