November 2021 Director’s Message
Hello Channel Islands Harbor!
I’ve just completed my first month as the new Harbor Director. During that short time, I’ve had the privilege of meeting many of you and hearing what you love about this harbor. I’ve also heard a lot about what needs to be improved.
At the top of that list is the site of the Casa Sirena Hotel and Lobster Trap Restaurant. I understand the frustration that the community is feeling, not just from losing a great restaurant and hotel, but also from the attractive nuisance that the derelict structures are creating.
To address this issue, on October 27th, I had a meeting with the proposed hotel developer, and with the adjacent marina developer to discuss some outstanding issues with the projects. Following that meeting I met with representatives of my department and the Oxnard Police Department regarding security and graffiti abatement. In addition, today I met with the County’s Homeless Services Program discuss having their staff visit the site to help get the individuals living at Casa Sirena services and housing.
I am confident that we can get the hotel project moving quickly, and in the meantime address the growing issues surrounding the abandoned buildings.
Channel Islands Harbor is already a beautiful place to visit and a great recreational resource for the County. I look forward to working with this community to further improve it and make it a top destination for locals and tourists alike.
Michael Tripp, Director
Ventura County Harbor Department
