The Ultimate Guide to Launching Your Kayak or Paddleboard at Channel Islands Harbor

If you’re gearing up for a day of adventure on the water at Channel Islands Harbor, you’re in luck! This beautiful harbor offers convenient public launch ramps and docks that cater to kayakers and paddleboarders. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a weekend warrior, knowing where and how to launch can set the tone for a smooth and enjoyable outing.

Here’s a guide to the best public launch spots in Channel Islands Harbor.

Kiddie Beach

Location: Along the shoreline at the south end of the Harbor, near the intersection of S. Victoria Ave. and San Nicolas Ave. close to Silver Strand Beach.

Why It’s Great: Kiddie Beach is an ideal spot for families and beginners. The calm waters here are perfect for a relaxed launch, and there’s a gentle sandy slope on the north side of the beach that makes it easy to get your kayak or paddleboard into the water. Plus, the beach is equipped with amenities like ample parking, outdoor shower, and public restrooms, making it a great spot to launch.

Launching Tips: Arrive early to secure a good parking spot, especially on weekends. Be mindful of other beachgoers and keep your launch area clear to ensure a smooth experience for everyone. Kiddie Beach is the only dedicated beach to swim in the Harbor waters, so expect families to have a presence at this launch site. Please launch in the designated launch area at the north end of the beach near the surge wall. Recently, Kiddie Beach has become well known for its seasonal seal lion population, so we recommend steering clear if they have a presence and remember they are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

Hobie Beach

Location: Just north of Kiddie Beach, located off Victoria Ave., adjacent to the U.S. Coast Guard Station.

Why It’s Great: Named after the iconic Hobie Cat sailboats, this location offers a dedicated area for launching manual watercraft because motorized vessels are prohibited in this area. It’s well-maintained and provides easy access to the harbor. It’s a popular spot for both kayakers and paddleboarders due to its direct access to the water and proximity to Kiddie Beach, which provides ample parking, an outdoor shower, and public restrooms.

Launching Tips: Check the local tide charts before heading out. High or low tides can affect the ease of launching. Also, keep an eye out for other watercraft and be courteous to fellow paddlers. Recently, Hobie Beach has become well known for its seasonal seal lion population, so we recommend steering clear if they have a presence and remember they are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

West Bank Day Dock

Location: The West Bank Day Dock is the public dock located behind the Channel Islands Maritime Museum, 3900 Bluefin Circle Oxnard, CA 93035.

Why It’s Great: The West Bank Day Dock is a convenient option with direct access to the harbor’s waterways. This location is usually less crowded compared to some of the more popular spots, offering a quieter and more relaxed launch experience. Another advantage to this launch site is it’s protected from prevailing winds by the adjacent buildings.

Launching Tips: This dock is sometimes occupied by the tall ship Mystic Whaler, so it can be busy at times. Even when the Mystic Whaler is present, you can launch your kayak or paddleboard on the inside of the dock. Please respect the north portion of the dock, which is privately operated by the Channel Islands Boating Center.

East Bank Day Dock

Location: The East Bank Day Dock is located just north of the Public Boat Launch Ramp and Fisherman’s Wharf off of Victoria Ave.

Why It’s Great: The East Bank Day Dock is another excellent launching point with easy access to the harbor. It’s ideal for those looking to explore the eastern parts of the harbor and beyond. The dock’s layout facilitates a straightforward launch process. At this location, an “EZ Kayak Launch” has been installed for convenience and there’s a rinse off located on the dock. Another advantage to this launch site is it’s protected from prevailing winds by the adjacent buildings. In addition, 2-hour free parking is available at the green curbs directly above the dock.

Launching Tips: Parking for this launch site can be accessed by driving into the Curlew Way cul-de-sac and driving north through the Public Boat Launch Ramp area.

Public Boat Launch Ramp

Location: Located at intersection of Curlew Way and Victoria Ave. on the east side of the Harbor.

Why It’s Great: While primarily used for motorboats, the Public Boat Launch Ramp is also available for launching non-motorized watercraft. It offers a sturdy and spacious area for preparing and launching, which can be advantageous for larger or heavier kayaks and paddleboards. In addition, public restrooms are available on the south side of the ramps.

Launching Tips: Be mindful of other boaters and their trailers. The ramp can get congested, so try to launch during off-peak hours if possible. Ensure you follow any posted regulations and respect the space needed for motorized vessels. A fee is required to use the parking lot. A credit card-friendly kiosk is located on the south side of the launch ramps.

Peninsula Park Guest Dock

Location: At Peninsula Park, located off Peninsula Road, near the Hampton Inn.

Why It’s Great: The Peninsula Park Guest Dock offers easy access to the harbor with beautiful views and a well-maintained dock. It’s a convenient spot for launching, especially if you’re visiting the park or nearby areas. The park offers a beautiful venue to enjoy lunch or play tennis!

Launching Tips: Be aware of other dock users and ensure your launch area is clear. The waters near this dock can get busy.

Toppers Pizza Dock

Location: Behind Toppers Pizza, at 2701 Peninsula Rd. Oxnard, CA 93035.

Why It’s Great: This dock provides a convenient access point to the water, particularly if you’re planning to grab a bite before or after your adventure. It’s a bit less formal but offers a quick and easy launch.
