🚨ONLINE PORTAL TO REPORT MARINE ANIMALS IN DISTRESS🚨According to @cimwi, there is currently a significant harmful domoic acid (DA) algal bloom. DA impacts our local marine life, especially our local sea lion population. CIMWI has reported sea lions impacted by DA as being tossed by waves, swimming erratically, and having seizures. It is best to give these wild animals additional space because they are not in control of their actions when they have DA, according to CIMWI. CIMWI has received an average of 150 calls per day lately. To streamline the reporting process, they have created an online reporting form at https://www.cimwi.org/online-rescue-form If needed, you call still call CIMWI’s hotline at 805-567-1505.

The owner of Sunday night’s aband

🚨UPDATE🚨 The owner of Sunday night’s abandoned kayak made contact with Ventura County Harbor Patrol this morning. The kayaker told Harbor Patrol he lost his paddle at the breakwater last night and swam to shore. The kayaker went back this morning to retrieve his belongings. That’s when he made contact with Harbor Patrol. We are thankful the kayaker was safe and appreciate all the agencies who responded to this incident.

Before You Go:

Check the weather: Before setting out, check the local weather forecast and conditions for you kayaking location, paying attention to wind speed, wave height, and potential storms.

Inform Someone: Let someone know where you’re going, your route, and when you expect to be back.

Know Your Limits: Don’t push yourself beyond your comfort level or experience.

Choose Appropriate Gear: Ensure you have the right gear for the conditions, including a Personal Flotation Device (PFD), paddle, and safety equipment.

Practice Good Paddling Techniques: Practice basic paddling strokes and learn how to capsize and rescue yourself or others.

Learn Basic First Aid: Know how to handle common injuries and emergencies.

While You’re Out Kayaking:

Always Wear a PFD: A properly fitted PFD can save your life if you fall into the water.

Dress Appropriately: Dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature, and consider wearing layers.

Stay Hydrated and Eat Regularly: Bring plenty of water and snacks to keep your energy levels up.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Pay attention to your surroundings, including other boats, wildlife, and potential hazards.

Avoid Alcohol and Drugs: Never paddle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Paddling in a Group: Paddling with a group is safer than paddling alone.

Carry a Whistle: Keep a whistle handy in case of an emergency.

Keep a Means of Calling for Help: Carry a handheld VHF radio or other communication device.

A search for a possible missing kayaker resumed th

A search for a possible missing kayaker resumed this morning following a search last night. Just before 10 p.m. on Sunday, an unoccupied kayak was located at the detached breakwater by a recreational fisherman. There was nobody located nearby the kayak. The kayak, pictured here, had fishing gear and fish on board. The initial response included the Ventura County Harbor Patrol and Fire departments, U.S. Coast Guard, and TowBoat U.S. The search yesterday was postponed at midnight. We will keep you updated if there any additional details. We would also like to share these kayaking safety tips:
